SIMPLE STEPS MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Alzheimer's sufferers cannot change the way they feel; they can't stop being depressed, confused, and angry from time to time - they don't know why they have these feelings, and they don't know how to feel better. Many books on Alzheimer's tell caregivers to expect sundowning, for example, and to just "grit your teeth and wait for the episodes to pass".  Nonsense! You can't change the individual, but you can change the environment! You, the caregiver, CAN take simple steps that keep the surroundings cheerful, improve the mood of the Alzheimer's sufferer, and reduce your stress.

The more than four dozen non-medical tips and techniques outlined in the book are based on commonsense concepts, and can easily be incorporated by caregivers into any daily routine.

Caregivers will learn how to intercept, manage or eliminate:
--- Sundowning
--- Unhappiness, depression, and anger
--- Withdrawal and isolation
--- Insomnia and other nighttime difficulties
--- Hiding (and losing) belongings
--- Wandering

THE STRESS ON EVERYONE CAN BE OVERWHELMING
Alzheimer's disease can be a devastating diagnosis, for the victim, the spouse, and the family.  It is frightening and worrisome when formerly competent, capable adults begin to exhibit anger, depression, fear, suspicion, and other irrational behaviors, most of which are directed against their caregivers, who are desperately trying to find ways to soothe, comfort, and assist their loved ones, even as they know it is a losing battle. The stress on everyone can be overwhelming.

The good news is that there is hope!

A Turn for the Better! - What Every Alzheimer's Caregiver Needs to Know is a new book by Kim Hendrickson Leffler. Her own father began showing signs of dementia fifteen years ago and was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease almost ten years ago. Kim's mother had been the sole caregiver until both parents arrived for a three month visit. This twenty-four hour a day exposure to her father's mood swings, habits, and mental abilities gave Kim a rare opportunity to observe patterns and propose solutions. The book details her discoveries of ways to stabilize, and even improve his mental condition by changing his environment.

The modifications she devised were incorporated into her father's daily routine, and have resulted in significant improvements in both his emotional state and his mental abilities!

Equally important, Ms. Leffler's mother is much less stressed, and though both parents are in their eighties, they continue to live on their own, and care for themselves!

A Turn for the Better! - What Every Alzheimer's Caregiver Needs to Know offers comfort, hope, and real support to those who need it most.

Local author Kim Leffler has just released her newest book, "A Turn for the Better! - What Every Alzheimer's Caregiver Needs to Know". It is all about the techniques she developed for her father, which have stabilized his Alzheimer's, and actually improved his condition. Many of the things she was able to do have helped to keep him cheerful, and eliminate the anger, sadness, sundowning, and depression experienced by those with Alzheimer's, and which affect the caregivers as well. Her dad began developing symptoms 15 years ago, but with the techniques she developed, her mother is able to continue to care for him herself, and you would never guess that her dad has Alzheimer's. The Alzheimer's Association of Richmond is really excited about this book as well. The book sells for $12.95, plus tax, and can be ordered from the website at www.windbornepress.com, or bookstores can order it for you.

What a wonderful book. Jan and I think you did a great job. Your suggestions are priceless. You will give so many people hope, not to throw up their hands and give up. My mom suffered with Alzheimer's for seven years. Everything you said in the book is true. Also only you would have considered using hypnotherapy, aromatherapy and safeguards. My mom wandered away from a nursing home. Fortunately, a secretary saw her wandering in the parking lot. After that they installed alarms on the doors and transmitters on the patients. Thanks for taking the time and effort to write such a clear and precise guide for Alzheimer's caregivers.

Just a note to send you my check for 2 more copies of your wonderful book. My yoga teacher has yoga classes for Alzheimer's patients and people with brain injuries from strokes. I'm going to give her a copy. Loved it! It's just like you to share what you learned, with others. Thank you!

I got your book today. The picture on the front cover gives a sense of hope - well chosen! ... I think it would be great for hospice/home health agencies to have. So many people with dementia are at home, being cared for by caregivers who need this kind of help and encouragement.

My dad gave me a copy of your book on caring for Alzheimer's patients.  I enjoyed it very much and appreciate the fact that you would share all that you have learned.  I passed it on to a friend of mine whose mother has dementia.  (She) read it and gleaned many good tips from it and she has now ordered her own book.
