Coping In New Territory addresses issues common to many adult children of aging parents. There are scores of books to guide us toward available services. We can do all the research needed to handle their medical, legal, and financial needs. But how do we manage a job, marriage, our children's needs, go to a movie, or take time to read a good novel? ... As a caregiver, you may be feeling grateful to give back to your parent all that he has given to you, But you are just as likely to feel resentful and grumpy. Your feelings today are the result of a lifetime of interactions with your parent. Often the feelings are conflicted; there is the mixture of love and resentment, of anger and patience, the satisfaction of helping and at the same time feeling overwhelmed at what has been heaped upon you. All of this is perfectly natural and normal.  This handbook is not designed to help you resolve any of those feelings. It is designed to help you cope with the results of those feelings, and keep them from crushing you.

Adopted Son Who was William Wirt? Orphaned by age 8, Wirt educated himself and opened a law practice at age 20. Nearly penniless, Wirt was befriended by Jefferson, Madison and Monroe, who helped guide his career. Wirt served as Clerk of the Virginia House of Delegates and later as a Delegate. Wirt defended the accused slayer of George Wythe, and prosecuted Aaron Burr for treason.  Wirt wrote The Letters of the British Spy, and the first autobiography of Patrick Henry. He was one of the best orators of his day. William Wirt Societies honored his memory. A noted Supreme Court lawyer, Wirt was involved in most of the landmark cases of his time. Wirt served on the College of William and Mary Board of Visitors, was awarded an honorary law degree by Princeton and was asked to be president of the University of Virginia. Wirt championed the cause of the Cherokee Indians against government oppression. In 1832, Wirt became the first "Third Party" candidate for the Presidency.
